Pass Plus Course
Pass plus is a extra driving qualification that takes at least 6 hours to complete and is for drivers to improve their skills and drive more safely. It can be taken at any time, although it should be most useful to new drivers in the year after passing their test.
What is a Pass Plus Course?
Pass Plus is a course set up by the Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) that you can take after you’ve passed your practical driving test and have received your full UK driving licence. This is not a mandatory qualification but optional qualification to have, by doing this course it can be very beneficial if you’d like to get some additional training, or want to polish the skills you picked up on your driving lessons.
What are the Pass Plus modules?
Driving in town –
The main majority of drivers will experience town driving the most. The Pass Plus course handles it in more detail. This course will help you polish up on your observational skills and build up your awareness levels to help make you a safer driver.
Motorway driving –
Motorway driving is not assessed in the driving test, it’s possible that many drivers might not have much experience of driving on the motorway. With more than 4,857 motorway casualties in 2021, accident statistics show that a lot of UK drivers could benefit from additional motorway lessons. In this module you will learn how to drive at a safe speeds in different driving conditions, dealing with motorway fatigue, how to handle a unexpected breakdown, use of lanes correctly, safe overtaking and following motorway road signs.
Driving in poor weather conditions –
Most drivers are told to avoid driving in bad weather conditions. That is good advice when you’re new to the road, but what happens when you don’t have a choice? If you have not driven in bad weather conditions before, it can be quite dangerous so to learn how to safely deal with heavy rain, snow, ice, fog and dazzling sunshine. In this module you will also learn how to prevent and handling skidding, as well as the importance of stopping distances in bad weather conditions.
Driving on smaller, rural roads –
Rural roads are the most dangerous for all road users, if you do a lot of driving in the countryside it comes with it different risks, including dealing with narrow roads at higher speeds, blind bends, animals that may be in the road and many more. So this part of the course is well worth taking. This section looks at helping you deal with sharp corners, horse riders, cyclists, farm vehicles and debris that you may encounter in the road.
Dual carriageway driving
You may have driven on dual carriageways on your driving lessons, but still don't feel fully confident, so a little bit of extra training can make all the difference. This module focuses on on helping you with joining and exiting dual carriageways via slip roads safely, as well as helping you with safe overtaking, lane discipline and safe following distances.
Driving at night –
You might not have had much experience with night-time driving, it requires more than just a good set of headlights. At night you would have to deal with reduced visibility and this can be a challenge to newly passed drivers both on urban and rural roads. In this module you will learn how to use your headlights and to adapt to poor visibility. This will help you build your confidence and make a huge difference in helping lowering your risk of accidents on the road.
Is there a test for the Pass Plus Course?
The one big difference between the Pass Plus Course and the process of getting your driving licence is that you won’t have to put yourself through another test at the end of the course.
Your driving instructor will continually be assessing you throughout all your training and you will have to reach a required standard in each module to pass. You will have either ‘achieved’ the standard required or ‘exceeded’ it.
If any of the modules are completed without a practical session, you can only get an Achieved grade. To potentially get a discount on your car insurance, you’ll need a Pass Plus certificate, which you’ll have to apply for yourself.
Once you’ve completed Pass Plus you may be able to get a car insurance discount. Check with your insurance provider to see if you can get a discount. Don’t forget, you’ll need your Pass Plus certificate to be eligible for any discount.
